Ophthalmology Department

Your eyes provide one of the most important connections to the world around you. Many eye conditions develop gradually and may cause little or no noticeable symptoms in their early stages. Regular eye examinations can therefore play an important role in detecting problems early, protecting vision and preventing avoidable sight loss.

Our new Ophthalmology Department provides comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and management of a wide range of eye conditions affecting children and adults.

Our approach goes beyond treating symptoms. We aim to identify the underlying factors that may contribute to eye disease, including age-related changes, metabolic and vascular conditions, hypertension, diabetes, lifestyle factors and other systemic health conditions.

Comprehensive Eye Assessment and Diagnosis

Our ophthalmology services are designed to assess the health and function of the eyes and identify conditions at an early stage.

Depending on your individual needs, assessment may include evaluation for:

  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetic eye disease
  • Hypertensive eye changes
  • Retinal disorders
  • Macular conditions
  • Dry eye disease
  • Refractive errors and changes in vision
  • Eye inflammation and other ocular conditions
  • Age-related eye conditions
  • Conditions affecting the optic nerve
  • Other disorders that may affect vision

Early diagnosis is particularly important because some eye diseases can progress without obvious warning signs.

Why Early Detection Matters

Not all vision loss is preventable, but many eye conditions can be successfully managed when identified early.

Early assessment can allow our specialists to:

  • Detect eye disease before significant vision loss occurs
  • Identify risk factors that may contribute to disease progression
  • Monitor changes in eye health over time
  • Begin appropriate treatment at an earlier stage
  • Help slow or prevent further deterioration
  • Preserve existing vision and improve quality of life

For some conditions, early treatment can result in significant improvement in vision. For others, the primary goal is to control the condition and prevent further damage.

Cataracts

A cataract occurs when the normally clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy, gradually affecting vision.

Cataracts can cause blurred or cloudy vision, difficulty seeing at night, sensitivity to light and reduced colour perception.

Cataracts are highly treatable. Depending on the severity and its effect on daily life, treatment may include monitoring or referral for cataract surgery. Early assessment allows appropriate management to be planned before the condition significantly interferes with everyday activities.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can damage the optic nerve, often in association with increased pressure inside the eye, although glaucoma can also occur when eye pressure is within the normal range.

Glaucoma can develop slowly and may cause no noticeable symptoms until significant damage has occurred.

Although damage that has already occurred cannot usually be reversed, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help slow or prevent further progression and protect remaining vision.

Regular monitoring is particularly important for people who have risk factors for glaucoma.

Diabetes, Metabolic Health and the Eyes

The health of the eyes can be closely connected with overall health. Conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and other metabolic or vascular disorders can affect the small blood vessels and tissues within the eye and increase the risk of certain eye diseases.

For this reason, our approach considers the patient as a whole rather than looking at the eyes in isolation.

Where appropriate, we may recommend further assessment of relevant health factors and encourage appropriate management of underlying conditions in collaboration with other healthcare professionals.

Managing these risk factors can be an important part of protecting long-term eye health.

Hypertension and Eye Health

High blood pressure can affect the blood vessels supplying the retina and may contribute to changes in the eye.

An eye examination can sometimes reveal changes associated with hypertension and other vascular conditions.

Our ophthalmology service works with patients to identify and monitor these changes and, where appropriate, coordinate care with other healthcare professionals.

Eye Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation

As part of our commitment to comprehensive eye care, the department will also offer an eye physiotherapy and rehabilitation programme, tailored to individual patient needs.

The programme may incorporate appropriate therapeutic exercises, visual rehabilitation techniques and supportive interventions designed to improve visual function, comfort and the patient's ability to perform everyday visual tasks.

We also intend to provide supportive physiotherapy and rehabilitation approaches for patients whose visual or general health may be affected by conditions such as hypertension.

All programmes will be based on individual assessment and will be provided where clinically appropriate.

A Preventive Approach to Eye Health

We believe that good ophthalmic care should not begin only when vision has already deteriorated. Regular examinations can help identify changes at an earlier stage, allowing patients and healthcare professionals to make informed decisions about monitoring, treatment and prevention.

Our goal is to help every patient:
Detect early.
Understand the cause.
Treat appropriately.
Protect vision.

When Should You Have an Eye Examination?

You should consider an eye examination if you experience:

  • Blurred or changing vision
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Eye pain or persistent discomfort
  • Flashes or new floaters
  • Sudden changes in vision
  • Increasing sensitivity to light
  • Headaches associated with visual problems
  • Difficulty reading or focusing
  • Red or inflamed eyes
  • Any unexplained change in your eyesight

People with diabetes, hypertension, a family history of glaucoma or other eye diseases may require more regular monitoring.

Your Vision Deserves Early Attention

Many eye conditions can be managed more effectively when detected early. Do not wait until a noticeable loss of vision occurs before seeking professional advice.

Our Ophthalmology Department is committed to providing thorough assessment, accurate diagnosis, personalised treatment and long-term monitoring to help patients maintain their eye health and preserve their vision.
